AI Mania or Market Momentum? The Hidden Path to S&P 500 at 7,500
Over the past five years, the S&P 500 has followed a clear rhythm of corrections and expansions.
1. The Three Major Corrections
- 2020 (Feb–Mar): The index dropped from 3396 to 2191, a 35% fall during the COVID shock.
- 2022 (Jan–Oct): Another 27% pullback from 4817 to 3489 as inflation and aggressive Fed tightening hit sentiment.
- 2025 (Feb–Apr): The most recent correction saw a 28% slide from 6147 to 4799, mainly triggered by renewed U.S.–China tariff tensions and fears of a global supply-chain slowdown. Those concerns eased as negotiations stabilized and investors shifted focus back to earnings and expected rate cuts.
Interestingly, all three corrections happened around January or February — a period when fund managers typically rebalance portfolios and adjust for tax planning.
2. Fibonacci Pattern Repeats
After each correction, the S&P 500 advanced to roughly the 100% Fibonacci extension of its previous swing.
- 2020 low projected a move to around 4600 — achieved by late 2021.
- 2022 low projected around 6145 — reached in early 2025.
- 2025 low now projects a new target near 7495.
3. Why 7,500 Looks Achievable
The index already broke above its long-term upper trendline, a strong technical signal of continuation.
On the macro front, U.S.–China relations are stabilizing, reducing global trade uncertainty. The Federal Reserve is expected to cut rates two more times, adding liquidity and supporting equity valuations.
With the S&P 500 currently trading near 6,900, only about 10% upside remains to reach the 100% Fibonacci extension near 7,495–7,500.
4. Outlook
If history continues to rhyme, the market could complete this move within the next few quarters.
The combination of lower rates, easing trade tensions, and strong technical momentum suggests that 7,500 is not a stretch target — it’s a logical continuation of the S&P 500’s long-term pattern.
In a market dominated by AI headlines, the quiet story might be the index itself — steadily following its Fibonacci path toward 7,500.
